The final months of SWALIM Phase V saw the termination of the project leadership of Hussein Gadain, who took up a new posting as FAO Representative in Egypt after successfully serving for three years as Chief Technical Advisor of the land and water information management project (see SWALIM Update, Issue 11).
In his place, in July 2016, Waleed Mahdi Al-Ghorairy took over as the new Chief Technical Officer (CTA). Mr. Mahdi is an Iraqi national and certified Civil Engineer with an MSc degree in Development Studies. The new SWALIM chief has nearly 20 years’ of experience in development work with the UN and other international organizations, including the UNDP, FAO and the World Bank.
Mr. Mahdi has worked particularly in the water sector and on various related technical subjects, like water resources management and development, feasibility studies, restoration of hydro-meteorological networks and services, dam planning and development, irrigation restoration and improvement, flood control and mitigation, water harvesting and food security support schemes, as well as resource mobilization, institutional/organizational strengthening and capacity building.
