Somalia is developing its first-ever National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, with the assistance of SWALIM, as a means of responding to its global obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) as well as reaffirming its commitment to sustainably managing its biological diversity – the key to a natural life support system for habitats and livelihoods.

So far, consultation workshops with key stakeholders in these three regions have already taken place. During the consultation workshops, the status, threats and way forward were outlined and the process of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan formulation was aligned with Convention on Biological Diversity (Strategic Plan 2011-2020 and its Aichi Targets).

Furthermore, the data availability and gaps for various biodiversity elements and eco-regions were identified. Considerable ownership of the NBSAP process among the stakeholders in general and respective Ministries in particular was attained through this process, evidenced by their lead role in holding these workshops on the one hand and their proactivity in providing substantial inputs on the other.

Preparation of the workshops/focussed group discussions report and its subsequent compilation in the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Somalia is currently ongoing.
